Where drones deliver

Each row is one operator in one metro area, linked to the announcement or report it is based on. "Live" means customers in part of that area can order today; coverage is usually a few miles around a store or hub, not the whole metro.

Who flies them

Wing

Alphabet subsidiary

The largest retail drone network in the U.S., built mainly around Walmart Supercenters, plus DoorDash, Papa Johns and Lowe's. Its small drones lower parcels on a tether from about 2.5 lb, with a planned increase to 5 lb.

  • Live in 5 metro areas, with about 14 more announced (Wing, Oct 2026)
  • More than 1 million commercial home deliveries (Wing, Oct 2026)
  • First drone operator with an FAA Part 135 certificate, in 2019

Amazon Prime Air

Amazon

Flies the MK30 from Amazon fulfillment centers, each covering roughly 175 square miles. Packages up to 5 lb. Amazon says it aims to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026.

Zipline

Independent, South San Francisco

Started with medical deliveries in Rwanda and now serves Walmart, restaurant chains and health systems in Texas, Arkansas and Ohio. Uber Eats deliveries through Zipline are due to start in its existing markets.

Flytrex

Israeli company with a Texas factory

Focused on food delivery in the Dallas–Fort Worth suburbs for DoorDash and Little Caesars; Uber invested in 2025. Its Sky2 drone carries up to 8.8 lb.

  • More than 200,000 U.S. deliveries (May 2026)
  • Plans 60 DFW sites by mid-2027

DoorDash Air

DoorDash

DoorDash has run drone orders through Wing and Flytrex since 2022. In July 2026 it got its own FAA Part 135 certificate, and in September it unveiled its own drone for a Northern California pilot.

  • "Tens of thousands" of drone deliveries to date (DoorDash, Jul 2026)
  • Will keep using Wing and Flytrex alongside its own aircraft

Newer and smaller operators

Manna, DEXA, Matternet

Manna, an Irish operator, made Tulsa its U.S. base in 2026. DEXA holds a Part 135 certificate and has flown in Ohio and run a pilot in New Jersey. Matternet flies healthcare deliveries and says it has offered consumer delivery in Silicon Valley since 2024. DroneUp, once Walmart's partner, has left drone delivery.

The rules that let them fly

Delivery drones fly under FAA rules written for crewed aircraft, adapted through waivers and exemptions. These are the milestones that shaped what's allowed today.

  1. First drone air carrier certificate

Wing receives the first FAA Part 135 certificate for drone delivery. Part 135 remains the only route for carrying other people's goods by drone beyond the pilot's sight. FAA

  2. Amazon certified

Amazon Prime Air becomes the first Part 135 drone operator flying aircraft over 55 lb. FAA

  3. Remote ID rule published

Registered drones must broadcast their identity and location, like a license plate in the sky. FAA

  4. Executive order on drones

EO 14307, "Unleashing American Drone Dominance", orders the FAA to propose a beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) rule within 30 days and finalize it within 240. Federal Register

  5. Part 108 BVLOS rule proposed

The FAA proposes Part 108, which would let delivery drones fly beyond sight under a standard rule instead of case-by-case waivers. Pilot groups object to giving equipped drones right-of-way over some crewed aircraft. Federal Register

  6. Comment period reopened

The FAA briefly reopens comments on electronic conspicuity and right-of-way. Federal Register

  7. Final rule sent for White House review

The final Part 108 rule goes to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. As of early October 2026 it has not been published; the FAA has said it hopes to publish by the end of 2026. Drone Authority

  8. DoorDash certified

DoorDash says it is the eighth drone operator to receive a Part 135 certificate. DoorDash

  9. Tariffs on imported drones

Proclamation 11055 sets Section 232 tariffs of 25% on drones of 25 kg or less and 100% on larger drones and some components, effective September 3, 2026. Federal Register

Common questions

Can I get drone delivery at my address?

Probably not yet, unless you live within a few miles of a participating store or hub in one of the live areas above. Coverage is set by the operator, so check the operator's own app or website: Wing, Amazon Prime Air or Zipline. Walmart and DoorDash customers will see a drone option at checkout where it's available.

What can a drone deliver, and how fast?

Small, light orders: typically up to 2.5–5 lb, such as groceries, household items, takeout or prescriptions. Walmart reports an average of 23 minutes from order to doorstep (May 2026).

How many drone deliveries have there been in the U.S.?

No agency publishes a national total, and operators report different things. Walmart said it was approaching 2 million drone deliveries in August 2026 (through Wing and Zipline). Wing reports over 1 million, and Zipline about 2 million worldwide. These overlap, so they can't be added up. For scale, roughly 20 million parcels are delivered in the U.S. every day by conventional means.

Is it legal, and who regulates it?

The FAA regulates the flights. Delivery operators need a Part 135 air carrier certificate plus waivers to fly beyond the pilot's line of sight. A standard rule for that, Part 108, has been proposed but not finalized. Cities don't control flight paths but do control where launch hubs can be built, and some Colorado towns paused hub approvals in 2026 while they write zoning rules (DroneXL).

Are delivery drones noisy?

They make a noticeable buzz near launch hubs, and noise is the most common complaint. Residents near Amazon sites in Ohio and Texas have raised noise and privacy concerns. Some proposed local rules cap hub noise at 65 dB at the property line.
